#287: Does God Want Me to Have Good Self-Esteem?

How do I convince myself and everyone else that I’m worthy of being loved? That may not be what the question sounds like in our minds, but when we measure our worth based on things like accomplishments, appearance, intelligence, education ―even our  work in the church—we are going to come up empty. Join us for a conversation about how we can truly come to understand that there is something more profound than what other people think about us.

Wonderful thoughts!!! By coincidence, I read a study about this from John MacArthur a few weeks ago and after that I read a note about the origins of self-esteem as a medical term. So, this podcast episode is great. And I have a question. As a teenagers mom and teacher at church youth group I wonder if low self-stem, depression and learned helplessness, are the same thing, and if not, how can recognize and distinguish between them, in order to pray better for young people and direct them to professional help or counseling if needed. Thank you and God bless you.

Hi Michelle, thanks for your comment! These three things are all unique, but they play into one another- often creating a cycle. If your child is struggling with depression, we definitely recommend a visit with their pediatrician. We love to recommend Focus on the Family and Family Life Today for parenting resources to help with low self-esteem or learned helplessness. Both of those website have a wealth of resources!
